Appendix 4. Trouble Shootings

1. When starting Sssim Studio, an error dialog appeared and the program terminated.

If you have not installed Windows Media Player 9, Sssim Studio can not run, or can not show images and movies in the Media Viewer Window. You can install it from here or Window Update.

2. The simulation runs slowly.

Solar System Simulator renders the whole scene as a real-time 3d objects, so it requires OpenGL acceleration capable graphic card for better rendering performance. To make it work smoothly, we recommend to use a good graphic card such as nVidia or ATI based one.

To optimize the settings to fit your environment, clicks Detail settings... button at the bottom of the Basic Panel in the Simulation Controler. When the Detail Setting Dialog shown, change the settings in it Display Panel as the following check list to find your best balance of the rendering quality and speed.

If the rendering performance becomes better and the rendering quality is acceptable, click Save button to save the settings and close the dialog box.

Furthermore, trying the topic 3-1, 3-2 and 3-6 of this trouble shootings may improve the performance in the some environment.

3. Sssim Studio crashes at the start up.
Sssim Studio renders nothing in the Simulation Window (still black).
Sssim Studio crashes by the specific operation.
An error dialog appears whn exiting Sssim Studio.
Sssim studio freezes the PC.

Aolar System Simulator requires the proper OpenGL rendering environment, enough Main memory and VRAM (Viewo memory). If your graphic card or its driver has some bugs or troubles in rendering OpenGL objects, the above problems may occur. If you have these kinds of problems, try to change the following system settings to avoide the problems.

1) Change display color

There may be cases where changing the display color to 16bit, 24bit ot 32bit solves the problems.

1. Right click your desktop, and click Properties item of the appeard popup menu.
2. Display Properties dialog will be appeared. Click Settings tab.
3. Select Colors pull down menu item to 16bit, 24bit or 32bit, different from the current setting.

If you still have the problem:
-> Go to 2)

2) Shrink the size of the Simulation Window

Shrink the size of th Simulation Window. If you're using the simulator in the full screen mode, change the resolution of the screen smaller.

If you still have the problem:
-> Go to 3)

3) Change Hardware acceleration level

1. Right click your desktop, and click Properties item of the appeard popup menu.
2. Display Properties dialog will be appeared. Click Settings tab.
3. Click Advanced... button.
4. Graphic card dependent dialog will appear. Click Performance tab.
5. Change Hardware acceleration slider one step lower. Restart your PC and chack the problem. If you still have the problem, continue to change the slider one more step lower...

If you still have the problem:
-> Go to 4)

4) Change the size of VRAM

Some kind of graphics chip shares its VRAM (Viewo memory) with the main memory. There may be cases where changing the VRAM size makes the program stable. To change the VRAM size, refer to the manual of your PC.

If you still have the problem:
-> Go to 5)

5) Update the driver of your graphic card

To fix the bugs and problems of the graphics card, update its driver to the latest one. To update the driver, refer to the manual of your PC.
